Hyderabad : In a significant development, the Telangana cabinet, in its meeting held on Sunday, resolved to transition from the existing “TS” to “TG” for vehicle registration in the state. This decision, aimed at a uniform and distinctive identification system, will also involve changing the number plates of vehicles to reflect the new abbreviation.
The Transport Department is actively working on formulating comprehensive guidelines for the implementation of this decision, and these guidelines are expected to be released within the next two to three days. The department is prioritizing user convenience and ensuring a smooth transition process for the over 1.50 crore vehicles registered in the state.
Telangana, with its rapidly growing population and urban development, witnesses approximately 10,000 new vehicle registrations daily. Despite the considerable volume, the authorities are committed to seamlessly incorporating the new registration system by displaying “TG” on the number plates of newly registered vehicles.
Existing vehicles with “TS” on their number plates will retain their current identification, and there will be no mandatory change for these vehicles. This move is seen as an effort to streamline the registration process and create a distinct identity for Telangana-registered vehicles.
In an attempt to ensure inclusivity, the Transport Department acknowledges that more than 3 million vehicles, even after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and the creation of Telangana, continue to operate with AP (Andhra Pradesh) number plates. No immediate action is planned for these vehicles, and they will continue to operate with their existing identification.
The decision to switch to “TG” for vehicle registration is expected to bring about a sense of regional identity and unity among Telangana residents. It reflects the state government’s commitment to modernizing and enhancing the efficiency of administrative processes while considering the practical aspects of vehicle registration and usage patterns. The public awaits the detailed guidelines from the Transport Department for a clearer understanding of the transition process.
