Bird Flu Outbreak: Nellore Implements Stringent Measures to Control Spread in Two Villages Nellore, Following the detection of avian influenza (bird flu) in two locations within the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, authorities from the Animal Husbandry Department have swiftly taken precautionary measures to curb the spread of the disease.
Maheshurudu, the Director of Animal Husbandry for the Nilurbi District, highlighted the initiation of preventive and cleaning efforts at the Chittagong and Gamaladiba breeding centers. In response to the outbreak, police officials have imposed a three-day closure of chicken shops within a 3 km radius of the affected areas, forming a 10 km surveillance zone around the two villages.
“We have implemented all necessary measures to control the disease,” stated M. Maheshwaradu, emphasizing the authorities’ commitment to addressing the situation. According to Maheshwaradu, Chittagong’s poultry farms are now devoid of chickens, while 340 chickens were culled in Gamaladiba’s farms. Extensive cleaning operations were carried out, with 800 houses cleaned on Friday and an additional 400 on Saturday.

As part of the containment strategy, a temporary ban on chicken rearing has been imposed for three months in the affected villages. After this period, a controlled reintroduction of 10 to 20 chickens will be allowed.
The Animal Husbandry Department had sent samples from the affected areas to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal for testing. The results confirmed the presence of avian influenza in the poultry population. Consequently, restrictions on the transportation of all poultry products have been implemented to prevent further spread.
Despite the initial challenges, authorities reassured the public by stating that no new chicken deaths have been reported in the last four days. The collaborative efforts of various departments aim to swiftly contain the outbreak and mitigate the impact on both the poultry industry and public health. Ongoing surveillance and adherence to safety protocols will be crucial in preventing the further spread of bird flu in the region.
