In a significant announcement on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed that three distinguished individuals – former Prime Ministers P V Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh, along with renowned agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan – will be posthumously honored with the prestigious Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.
Pamulaparti Venkata Narasimha Rao, often hailed as the “Architect of Modern India,” served as the 9th Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996. His leadership during critical economic reforms, especially the liberalization of the Indian economy, played a pivotal role in steering the nation towards a path of economic growth and global integration.
Chaudhary Charan Singh, remembered as the “Champion of Farmers,” served as the 5th Prime Minister from 1979 to 1980. His tenure was marked by a deep commitment to the welfare of farmers, and he implemented several pro-farmer policies that had a lasting impact on the agrarian landscape of the country.
M S Swaminathan, a preeminent agricultural scientist, is widely recognized as the “Father of the Green Revolution in India.” His groundbreaking research and efforts to improve agricultural productivity have been instrumental in ensuring food security for the nation. Swaminathan’s contributions extend to sustainable farming practices and the empowerment of rural communities.
The Bharat Ratna, instituted in 1954, is a symbol of the highest recognition for exceptional service in various fields. The decision to honor these eminent personalities reflects the government’s acknowledgment of their transformative contributions to the nation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the enduring impact of the awardees, stating that their legacies continue to inspire and guide the nation. The conferment of the Bharat Ratna on P V Narasimha Rao, Chaudhary Charan Singh, and M S Swaminathan is a fitting tribute to their indelible contributions to the progress and prosperity of India.
